A common application for reed switches is in security systems, illustrated on this slide. The switch is mounted at the top of the door frame while the magnet is attached to the top of the door itself. When the door is opened, the magnet loses contact with the switch and causes the switch to open. The control circuit senses the open contacts and sounds the alarm.
