An ADC (analog to digital converter) is a mixed signal device that accepts analog input signals and converts them to digital signals. The analog signals are “digitized” for analysis by a local micro-controller or saved in storage for use at a later time. Most ADCs are voltage based, but there are some current based ADCs. Signal accuracy is heavily dependent on the quality of the voltage reference. Users can have a world class performing ADC, but connect it to an inaccurate voltage reference, then all the ADC’s benefits are negated. It is important to have a stable and highly accurate voltage reference.
