“Hot swapping” or “hot plugging” is a technique commonly used in high end server or data storage chassis. This type of design allows for fan installation into a device which can be removed and replaced while the rest of the equipment continues to operate. The functionality is primarily utilized to replace defective components without system down time. While beneficial for its utility, hot swapping can cause a drawback called “reverse rotation” which can ultimately cause system errors and require a system reboot.
