This example will be evaluating multiple competitors to the MSP430G2xx at the same supply voltage, and what the chip needs to do for the same task. Specifically, looking at battery operated devices, they spend a significant portion of their life in standby mode, anywhere from 99.0-99.9% of their time. In standby mode, the CPU is either asleep or off, and power consumption is critical. The Value Line offers ultra-low power as low as 100 nanoamps compared to typical 8-bit competitors, which have 10 to 70 times higher power consumption. As was alluded to on the previous slide, improved code density typically means less instruction cycles. Therefore, 16-bit solutions are inherently lower power than 8-bit devices because software can complete tasks faster and more efficiently. This results in lower active currents, lower standby currents and faster wakeup times. Additionally, the faster software enables the MSP430 to stay in low power mode for longer periods, minimizing time spent in active mode and increasing overall product life.
