Alternately, a 24V or 48V rail from the AC/DC power supply can be used to power an Intermediate Bus Architecture (IBA) converter, or “brick”. The IBA brick converts the 24V or 48V to 5V to power 5VDC input POLs. The upside is that 5V input POLs are more efficient than 12V POLs, and lower currents are distributed from the AC/DC power supply. The downside is that for larger systems, higher 5V currents are present on the pcb cards, requiring bigger or thicker pcb traces. Most designers limit this solution to cards drawing less than 150W.
