In DC/DC buck converter applications, MOSFETs are turned on and off to control the current through the inductor. On the left side shown here there is an application circuit showing a synchronous buck using a MOSFET for both the high and low side switch. The right side shows the switching waveforms for a buck regulator. When the high-side MOSFET is on the low side MOSFET is off and vice-versa. The bottom diagram shows the switch node where S1, S2 and L1 are all connected. The MOSFETs are repeatedly turned on and off to step down the voltage from input to output. The MOSFET’s ability to turn on and off quickly impacts the efficiency of the step down regulator.
