The maximum data rate that a switch can be used at is dictated by its bandwidth. To preserve the quality of a digital signal, the switch needs to have flat amplitude and group delay responses over the entire frequency range occupied by the digital signal spectrum. The level of distortion in a digital system is usually measured using eye diagrams which represent the response of the system to a pseudo random bit stream (PRBS) test signal. Compliance to various standards is tested by applying a mask test to the eye diagram, which consists of a set of polygons displayed on the screen of the analyzer. Each standard has its own set of masks and the system passes the mask test if the eye diagram waveform does not intersect with the polygons defined by the mask test. Any intersections with the polygons introduce errors in the system which degrade the link quality.
