One of the benefits of having NMOS and PMOS in parallel with one another is a wide input voltage range from Vdd to Vss. The switch is fully bi-directional which means that the input signal can go from Source to Drain or vice versa. The parallel combination of NMOS and PMOS also gives a relatively constant RON over the input signal range.
